Case Study: Coffin Box

The coffin box is a tiny organism known as a "bryozoan." It can live in colonies ranging from millimeters to meters in size. In 2002, this species appeared all along the west coast of Newfoundland. Kelp forests became covered with this pest. The kelp then started to die and wash ashore. The coffin box is currently found in the warmer water of western Newfoundland, but it will become more widespread as the oceans continue to warm.
