Tropical storms and hurricanes gain strength over warm water and lose strength over cold water. As the oceans become warmer due to climate change, more tropical storms and hurricanes are maintaining their strength and reaching northern areas more frequently. While no single event can be tied to climate change, these types of storms are becoming more frequent and intense in Newfoundland and Labrador.
